May 8, 2023

Save money with solar

If you have or are considering grid-connected solar to do better for our planet, save money on power bills, or have back up power in the event of a power cut – it pays to shop around for the best power company to support it. By researching and comparing prices, you can save money on your electricity bill and choose the most cost-effective option for your needs.

The price of electricity doesn’t seem to be reducing any time soon, so it’s helpful to regularly check if you’re getting the best deal with your power provider and make some smart changes to the way you use any grid power.  We’ve compiled a few tips to help you maximise on your power savings with solar:

  1. Review your current electricity retailer
Are you getting good buy-back rates for any solar energy you’re exporting back to the grid?  Check out Powerswitch’s guide on the best solar buy back rates here
Do you get free power?  Some retailers offer free hours of power in their deals, which means consumers can use as much power as they want within a certain time frame for FREE! It could be helpful leading into winter to use free power to top up your solar battery storage to cover you when the sun’s down and power costs are at their peak rate.  There’s some helpful information provided on the Power Compare website here.
  2. Make changes to your lifestyle to save money on your power bill
The team at Consumer NZ have put some great information together to help you: the first article shares two simple ways to save over 20% on your power bill. You can check it out by clicking here.
